Drum lessons were a major part of my life growing up. A friend of mine took guitar lessons. We used to practice our music instruments a lot throughout middle school and high school. We used to call on one another and make sure the other was still practicing the drums or practicing the guitar when we would have one of our practice marathons, which were frequent. Not only were the practice sessions lengthy, beyond all else, they were worth it. He is able to shred on the guitar and I can play a pretty good groove on the drums.

My drum teacher placed a big importance on working the drum rudiments between the hands and feet. Complete control of the limbs was taught to me at an early age. Getting away from my comfort zone was the goal with the syncopated drum beats he would notate for me.
My guitarist friend used to always be practicing guitar scales, arpeggios and chords all throughout the neck of the guitar. He was (and still is) very knowledgeable with music theory and harmony.
