As for students, remember that you will not be able to become a guitar hero overnight. You need to be persistent and diligently practice consistently overtime. You need to learn how to play the guitar first. Then once you have acquired enough skills to be able to jam in a band setting you will learn how to collaborate with the other melodic factors such as the bass and vocals. Then periodically go back and refine your skills on your own time so that you are constantly improving overtime. Of course you can also go down the path of getting a drum machine and producing beats and guitar song ideas on your own. Then you could present some of these song ideas to your band.
There is a whole underground world of guitarists out there fascinated by drum machines and their ability to make their own beats so that they can jam on the guitar. It’s actually a lot of fun. And with your guitar skills you should easily be able to play some cool bass parts to your guitar riffs. home recording studios are relatively cheap and what you can accomplish with them really are amazing.
